Jennifer In The Movies
From James Donahue's Journal
After she lost her license to drive and was forced to drop out of Junior College, Jennifer received a tip from her cousin, Becky Babcock, that Ted Turner was shooting a Civil War documentary in the Atlanta, Georgia area where Becky lived. Becky said she was working as an extra on the film set and she thought there was a chance for Jennifer to get a job there as well. We learned about it through Becky’s father, Jerry, who was stopping by our home almost daily for coffee.
Becky offered Jennifer a place to stay and a ride to and from the set. It was an exciting prospect for Jennifer. I had the time so I drove Jennifer to Atlanta where she moved in with Becky and her family.
The film was a documentary about Appomattox, a terrible prison camp operated by the Union Army in which a lot of Confederate soldiers were confined like cattle, many of them starved to death. It was a very dark spot in American history. Jennifer was hired and got to make a few appearances in the film, usually dressed like one of the Confederate soldiers in the background. It was an adventure for her. She remained on that job for a month or more and actually got to see Turner riding around the set in a motorized cart.
Jennifer met and began dating a young man named Rocky on the set. But her involvement with Rocky led to a disagreement between Jennifer and Becky that came to a head the night Rocky came to the house with Jennifer. Because it was quite late and he had a long way to drive to get back to his home, he spent the night on the couch. When Becky found Rocky in the house the next morning she assumed the worst and kicked Jennifer out on the street.
When we got the call from Jennifer, she had been given a ride into Atlanta to one of the places other members of the movie set were staying so she had temporary shelter until I could get there. I got in the car and drove to Atlanta, stopping only one night in Chattanooga, then tracking down the address she gave me the following morning.
Becky’s brass decision to throw Jennifer out into the street caused a rift in the family that never healed. She accused Jennifer of wrongdoing. Jennifer thought Becky, who was married and the mother of children, had some kind of romantic interest in Rocky, which caused her to react the way she did. Jerry took Becky’s side in the issue. In the end, Jerry broke off all ties with us and refused to speak to Doris again. Doris made several attempts over the years to patch things up with her brother but he only agreed to speak briefly to her once over the phone.
