Archangel Zadkiel – Co-Chief With Gabriel
By James Donahue
When the angels of the Lord unite to get a major job done on Earth or among the Heavenly beings, it is believed that Zadkiel and Jophiel are the two standard bearers following the Archangel Michael into battle. At least this is how the Hebrew priests of old envisioned him. Other writings say Zadkiel is listed as co-chief with the Archangel Gabriel.
Does this elevate Zadkiel to the title of archangel? Many Biblical theologians believe it does. But then, what is the difference between the archangels and the many other lesser angels in the heavens? And what separates the angels in God’s realm with the fallen angels that are believed to occupy Earth?
Indeed, Biblical researchers and theologians generally separate the angelic hosts as archangels, thrones, dominions and seraphim. The angels of Heaven are said to be pure spirits that adore God and serve as His messengers. Also each human is said to be assigned a guardian angel to look after our daily walk. Then to further complicate the story, theologians and writers also separate the many angels into nine choirs, each with a unique position. Together they form the “hosts of heaven.”
With this in mind, we must regard Zadkiel as a major angel. He is so much so that some writers believe he may have been the unnamed angel that was sent to stop Abraham from sacrificing his son as commanded by God.
The very name Zadkiel is Hebrew that means “Righteousness of God.” This angel also has been given the name Hesediel, clearly making him an archangel bearing the name “Grace of God.” He is said to be the archangel of freedom, benevolence, mercy and the Patron Angel of all who forgive.
When we think about it, when we find the grace in our hearts to forgive those who do evil unto us, the Archangel Zadkiel is likely involved.
