When we think of contemporary horror films we think of two inexplicable beasts of the silver screen . . . Frankenstein, the monster created by a crazed scientists trying to bring the dead back to life . . . and Dracula, the blood supping vampire that roams in the night. What is especially interesting is that the novel, Frankenstein, was written by Mary Shelley, the second wife of British novelist Percy Bysshe Shelley, on a dare while they were waiting out a stormy summer with other well-known writers in 1816. At the time I worked in Benton Harbor a remnant of the once infamous House of David still existed. The property is but a museum today, and the official story of what happened there has been somewhat distorted. Yet I know that what went on in that cult was one of the strangest stories linked to a religious belief system that has ever occurred. The cult was still active and still wielded some political power in the community when we were there in the 1960s. But the members that remained, all white-haired older women in long dresses and men with long flowing beards that reminded us of the Amish, were fast dying off. Yet they still waited faithfully for their god, the founder of the cult named Benjamin Purnell, to rise up from the dead and carry them all to glory.

The new rage among realtors in selling haunted houses may seem peculiar. But in this new somewhat insane world, people are demanding strange and exotic things. Why wouldn’t they be interested in owning and sharing a house with spirits of the past? What surprises me is that buyers are being goaded into paying extra to purchase a home with ghosts. In my years of reporting and because of the hobby my wife and I shared, of buying and restoring old homes, I can report from personal experience that most older homes are very likely haunted.

It seems that a 17-year-old youth from Katimavik spotted the lights of a fully rigged sailing ship in Tatamagouche Bay, at the mouths of the French and Waugh Rivers. The sighting was marked as paranormal because of two factors; the sighting occurred in mid-winter when the bay was completely frozen over, and because it was a sailing ship, something that hasn’t been observed in Tatamagouche Bay for well over a century.

It was an invitation to take psychedelic drugs, use the drugs to awaken the mind to reality, and then separate from a profane world. Governmental authority succeeded in destroying Leary. His words were misinterpreted by law enforcement to mean that the doctor, a skilled psychologist, was leading America's youth into an evil drug culture. Leary's advice was sound and his message should still be listened to even today.

If We Create Our Reality With Our Minds . . .
There is a belief by some spiritual thinkers that if the Creator exists within each of us, we create our own unique universe in which we live. In effect, this theology also teaches that since we create our own reality, we also create our personal situation in life, including the physical afflictions, struggles against poverty, and all of the other troubles we face in our daily walk. Why would we do this? The idea is that we have chosen this life style because we decided even before we were born to accept it as a way of working our old karma, bad habits and working off evil deeds committed in past lives.

A news clip about a police officer that dreamed where a missing deaf and dumb woman was accidentally trapped in a chimney flu in Wales prompted me to write a brief discourse on dreams and what goes on while we sleep. It seems this woman was a housekeeper in the home where she lived. When she went missing one day in 1871, the homeowner summoned help from the local police. That morning a man identified only as Inspector Strefford came to the house, walked straight down the cellar stairs, and found the woman stuck hard in an open flue. She had fallen there from the fireplace in the room above and because of her condition was unable to call for help. The woman was stuck so fast it required the removal of a portion of the chimney to free her. Her life was saved because the inspector had a dream that led him right to her.

When my wife and I went among the Hopi people in 1997 we befriended a two-horned priest who introduced us to one of the last six living tribal elders. She wrote: "If you magnify an eyelash, or a drop of water, you will see millions of living cells and organisms floating around. Death is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as the end of life of an organism or cell. "In humans and animals, death is manifested by the permanent cessation of vital organic functions, including the absence of heartbeat, spontaneous breathing and brain activity. " For those of us who have watched a loved-one or pet die, the above description is quite accurate, except for the spiritual part of the death experience. It is a highly emotional experience, one in which the spirit of the individual occupying the body leaves it, never to return. Death is part of the life experience. Most of us don't want to think about it.

Navajo Skinwalkers and Shape Shifters
An article by Clyde Klukhohn involving Navajo witchcraft brought to mind our personal experiences with the Navajo during the winter in 1996 when my wife and I lived with a medicine man and his wife near the Four Corners. Klukhohn notes that the Navajo who practice skinwalking and shape shifting are using a form of black witchcraft that is unique to the Navajo. He said it has no resemblance to the “European variety” of black magic practiced among the witches. This writer lived with a practicing black witch on the Navajo reservation, and afterward lived with a practicing black magician for several years.
