Destruction of the National Weather Service
By James Donahue
Donald Trump is an enemy of all mankind.
It should be a simple deduction on the part of all Americans that global warming (i.e. weather change) is our greatest threat. Not just ours but a threat to the human race. Because of his obvious sell-out to the oil, gas and coal companies Mr. Trump is doing everything in his power to block world-wide efforts to shift to non-carbon fuels. He seems to deny the reality of global warming. And because he sits in the White House, he has a lot of power.
Mr. Trump has used the power of his office to not only separate the United States from world efforts to fight a catastrophic apocalyptic event, but he has been doing all that he can to slash the service that helps keep us safe when the weather goes array. Because of global warming the weather is going radically array, and it is happening almost daily. It is almost as if the man hates the people that put him in power so much he is willing to speed up the looming threat of our extinction. In reality, however, it appears that it is the man's personal greed; his quest for money, that causes his actions.
Trump has promoted the use of coal in our electric generating plants.
He has declared nuclear toxins relatively safe and given the approval for dumping this deadly material in areas where residents get constant exposure.
He has opened coastal waters, government-owned lands and arctic regions to wildcat oil and gas drilling.
Now hidden behind the controversial news about the government shut-down over the congressional refusal to finance Mr. Trump’s insane demands to build a wall at the Mexican border, are severe budget cuts that also are proposed for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Trump wants to shave $900 million from the NOAA budget and an even larger cut in funds to the Office of Oceanic & Atmospheric Research.
The NOAA cuts will slice financial support for some key programs that include the National Sea Grant and Tsunami Research and Operational Warnings. It threatens major weather satellite systems now in development.
This is only the tip of one phase of the national budget which seems to divert most of the nation’s tax dollars to military development for the financial benefit of big corporations that build the costly machines used to conduct warfare.
Needless to say that key weather information is important to the men and women operating the ships, aircraft and space craft launching from the surface of this planet. It also is a service that most vehicle drivers also are depending on as they move people and materials from one end of the nation to the other. It is an important element to agriculture and the protection of people and animals that fight to exist in hot and heating climates. It is a vital element to the people caught in the path of a looming hurricane, tornado or winter gale.
Many of us take the nightly weather forecasters on our television screens for granted. Because of our heating earth, however, and the extreme weather changes occurring, the information uttered by these television personalities is getting more and more important. It is terrifying to realize that Mr. Trump is doing all he can to add inaccuracy to those daily forecasts.
