America’s Scary Presidential Race
By James Donahue
If we can believe the corporate-controlled media in the United States, voters are poised to choose between two extremely unpopular candidates to fill the looming presidential vacancy in Washington. The candidates that appear to be rolling off the top of the garbage Heep are:
--Donald Trump, who literally bullied his way through state primary elections and caucuses to seize enough committed ultra conservative and angry delegates to win the Republican nomination during the looming national G.O.P. convention in Cleveland during the week of July 18-21.
--Hillary Clinton, former First Lady, former Secretary of State and Senator, who has been staying one-step ahead of Democratic Party challenger Senator Bernie Sanders to almost (but not quite) secure enough electoral votes to win her party’s nomination. The Democratic Party Convention will be held the week of July 25 in Philadelphia.
Trump, a television personality and wealthy billionaire by inheritance, apparently gained popularity among illiterate southern voters and T-Party followers because of his blatant attacks against established ways of getting things done in Washington. His followers clearly want change, but people who know better question the man’s ability to (1.) really represent the common people and (2.) his possible inability to use tact in negotiating with anyone, especially representatives of his own legislators and leaders of other nations. Consequently GOP leaders are fearful of a Trump Administration. Because of the nation’s election rules, they appear powerless to do much about what is happening.
Clinton is trekking her way to Washington with a lot of questionable baggage. While she has gained some popularity among voters who like the idea of a female president, Hillary is presently being hounded by the FBI over questionable emails sent from her private computer during her time as Secretary of State. She and President Bill Clinton have been linked to a long list of questionable deaths during their years in the White House. Hillary was the center of an intense Whitewater fraud investigation over questionable land transactions while she was working in Arkansas law offices and Bill was serving as Arkansas Governor.
Neither Trump nor Clinton is showing concern about the world climate change crisis. Instead of joining the rest of the world in promoting a shift toward green energy, they appear sold out to U.S. corporate interests that still press for fossil-fuels to power cars, electric power plants and industry. They also appear poised to support reduced taxes for the wealthy and continued warfare in the Middle East; accomplishing all this with a multi-trillion dollar national budget deficit.
In other words, it won’t matter which one gets elected, Americans appear to be trapped into four more years of same-old same-old. There does not seem to be a way for people to vote our way out of this mess.
The only shining light in this campaign has been Bernie Sanders who is consistently calling for real change. Unlike Clinton, whose campaign has been financed heavily by big corporations, Sanders’ campaign has been largely financed by small donations from a lot of people. His Socialistic ideas have been so popular people have packed his public appearances. Yet without fair media attention, Sanders has been unable to secure enough support on state levels to capture the party nomination. By staying in the race, however, he has prevented Clinton from securing enough state delegates either. The big question is how a long list of uncommitted delegates will vote when they appear at the national convention in July.
There is a growing youth movement on Twitter dubbed “Drop Out Hillary.” The idea is to force Clinton to drop out of the campaign and give the nomination to Sanders.
That is because the latest national polls are showing that Sanders would easily defeat Trump if the two were pitted against one another in November. Hillary doesn’t have that strong a showing and there is a fear, even among the Republicans, that Trump might seize the election.
Who knows where that might lead us.
