World Medicine Wheel Marks Summer Solstice
By James Donahue
Native tribes from around the world recognize the Summer Solstice, June 21, as a special day of the year. It is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the time when the Earth is tilted at its farthest point so that folks in the Northern Latitudes experience the Sun reaching its highest position in the sky and is the day. It is an important part of the year’s growing season.
It should not be surprising that the tribes celebrate June 21 by marking the Earth as a giant medicine wheel, with sacred sites established in the United States, Europe, Australia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Ireland, and the Middle East. The medicine wheel is recognized as a symbol of symmetry and balance, not only for world leaders but for individual worshipers. It is considered the sacred circle of life; marking special elements in four directions, North, South, East and West.
Tribal beliefs consider meditation within the medicine wheel an important part of religious practice. Like most other people of the world, the tribes see a contemporary world that is out of balance. The world-wide participation in the medicine wheel celebration is thought of a method of changing energies and putting the world, if not individual lives, back into proper balance.
Participation can be by a group ritual or by taking a moment to offer silent prayer mentally seeking to set things right. One public relations call noted that “once the sacred space is defined, people can gather to direct thoughts, prayers and mantras in collective thought.”
It is such a wonderful concept. If only the rest of the world would pause and participate in medicine wheel ceremonies like this. Mass global participation like this might just generate the mental power to change everything. Imagine if you will a world suddenly shifted back into balance. There would be no more war, no more killing and all people living in peace and harmony with one another.
Pray for this. Pray not only on June 21, but all of the time.
